¦=The Early Days=¦
In the beginning there was a demo, a demo called 'Fallout:Tactics'. It was to be the 3rd game in the Fallout series (after Fallout 1 and 2). People downloaded the demo from GameSpy and began playing what seemed a very accomplished and fun game, using what minimalist maps and characters were available to have fun. The game came out in either late 1999 or early 2000, and those who had enjoyed the previous Fallout games and those who had played the demo went and bought what they believed to be Fallout 3. Fallout:Tactics, Brotherhood of Steel was far from a third installment of the genre - it was a tactical combat game based more on gameplay than the previous games which had relied on storyline and roleplaying to get you ahead. The biggest change was that Fo:T was no longer turn based in one player.. it was frantic for people who had got used to playing one attack after the other. As good as the single player game was, the main idea for FoT was the multiplayer aspect, that could either be played using a user's IP address as a server or GameSpy Arcade. I started playing in mid 2001, in my nooby guise as 'Catslayer'. I got interested in lower-k games... if you knew the rules and had characters even a noob wouldn't get kicked out. But the history of Khans begins in the first few weeks of the demo. The first ever FoT clan to be set up was 'TBC' or 'The Black Company'. Quick to follow was 'The Khans', led by Viren, who was also the guy who designed the official website khanscentral. Viren led khans under the tag [TKs] for many successful months that weilded the first examples of clan warfare between TKs and TBC. Then, Viren disappeared from Fallout, leaving a new leader needing to take his place. Gargantua, who now plays Neocron with the rest of the Khans, took his place. Viren, leaving only the ftp password for khanscentral and a bunch of rowdy raiders, gave up his leadership to Garg and went to get a life ; )
¦=The Khans Under Gargantua and Deacon=¦
Gargantua was fast to establish his second in command, an amazing all-round player; Deacon. The two ruled with an iron fist and achieved something that no other clan could - a twenty-seven unbeaten clan match record. This was the era in which I joined, when Khans were blossoming into a huge force in the FoT world. I battled my way up the ranks and into 10k raider leader position, where I controversially remained, under pressure from fellow Khans such as Ghetto Goose and FireWolf. I played my part in the great few months that followed - with Khans from all nationalities pillaging and burning at 10k, 2k, ww2 and 1k matches alike. These were the good days, and loot was flying around the Khan ranks like bees in a hive. During my time in [Khans] as 10k leader, I took part in no less than 10 undefeated clan matches, alongside great friends such as Rambo, Drew, Night God and Mack. We later formed a Khans regiment, first known as Killing Is Natural (KiN), next named Ghost Raiders, and this regiment of great 10k players changed the face of 10k matches to Khans' favour every time.
However, bad times were approaching. People soon deserted the Fallout battlefield in search for new games and Gargantua was known to have abandoned the field for a considerable time after playing many 2k and ww2 matches for his clan. There were arguments within the clan, on GameSpy and the forums, between the leaders and Drew, Mack and Night God. What followed were times of waiting...
¦=The Dark Ages=¦
Gargantua, having led Khans so well through many many months of FoT helped by his right-hand-man Deacon, was feeling the pressure of looking after an ever-growing clan. New recruits were arriving by the bucketload and leaving just as fast. This was the time for GameSpy when clans became two-man powers and many failed to hang on. Clan matches were a rarity, as it was hard to find men from both sides to make up the numbers. Gargantua at this point had pulled back to the forums, where he was harassed by new clans starting up and looking to pick a fight with who they believed would prove their hardest challenge. Mack, Drew and Night God, the most notorious raiders in Khans had left to join other, such as RXJ, where they went in search of glory and helpful advice.
So what of the Khans that remained? Half were waiting for a new game, with suggestions like Quake, Unreal tournament and others, but none of these proved to be what the Khans was after. FireWolf had done his research and found a new game company developing the world's first cyber-punk mmorpg (massively multiplayer role playing game - everyone has a character in this first person shooter where you gain levels and communicate with each other by speech and plasma cannon). This game was Neocron. It was eagerly anticipated within the Khan ranks, and many went into hiding waiting for the game. Those who were left in GameSpy, noteably me and rambo and a few others, were holding on to our respect by our little fingers, when annoying noob after annoying noob harassed us 'Khants' and looked to bigger, more modern clans to get their glory. Khans was all but a tiny glimmer left in FoT, most awaiting the new arrival Neocron.
¦=Neocron=¦
Then came the Neocron Beta. Khan ranks that were never even thought possible to exist emerged to download this new demo of the game that had been eagerly awaited. Khans in FoT now was a 3-man force. I had been banned from GameSpy for using a registering crack, which i deeply regret, and Rambo, Cobra and very few others kept the fire burning - but only just. Khans flocked to buy the game when it came out - as did I. I began playing Neocron with my other Khans - long lost Khans and Khans i had forgotten about. New Khans, younger Khans, Neocron was the game that Khans could easily overthrow with many new members. I joined and played for a while. Then FoT beckoned me again... Neocron was all good and well, but it was losing its impact on me already within the first few weeks. I went back to a deserted GSA. One Khan was all that was left - Cobra. I began playing again with my Khans tag, much to the surprise of everyone present. The Khans by now had a firm grasp of Neocron, one of the biggest clans in the game with the most dedicated members - Deacon, noteably. These were the days of Neocron.
¦=The Future=¦
[nR] began as an experiment - The Khans Evolution I called it. I had tried in vain to recruit for FoT Khans in the Neocron days and no one came. I made an [nR] recruitment room and people flocked. I decided that this was the future for Khans in FoT, nuRaiders would be a step forward for Khans, and I took up the position as leader, being the only person left in Fallout with a high enough rank. New name, new leader, new image. For anyone who's still reading this, it was the history of Khans, not the future. The future will be fun, I can tell, but we never know what's gonna happen, so for now get out there and have some fun!
